Exceptional when it works. It is very buggy and crashes. I will change to a 5 star once fixed.

Crashes all the time

I have iOS 9,I think it the best chess app you can learn a lot from this app (auto rating, ant puzzle ) but it keeping crashing and crashing all time. Do wast your time and money they never try to fix it very good app but very very poor support.

Now Oct 16, 2016. Ver 1.7.1. This app is still very buggy. No cursor knowing placement of text input. Nothing really fixed. ------ Since iOS 8 came out I am having so many issues with this app!.. It works, but it has this instability sort of. When typing into the fields I cannot see where I am going to type next letter. No blinking of a cursor, nothing! There are other issues like getting hung for a second. It works as a Chess engine, but not as an iOS app. When it will be fixed I will then adjust my review accordingly. I am waiting already too long for an update!

It is great to see that the Shredder development team has continued to support this application. Such continued efforts are the hallmark of quality on iOS, and serve as the gold standard to all prospective developers. Thanks for a great app. Edit: The latest updates have been halfhearted at best. It would be nice to see the developers give this gem the attention and polish it deserves, as Id love to increase my rating to 5-stars.

I love this app. However it has many problems and it really requires an update, is difficulty is not really in ordered of strenght as its rating in 1250 is more challenging than 1450, it would be better if they add a solution to this problen in the later update

Smooth interface and robust on features. Excellent app.

Best engine for human-like, autoscaling difficulty. Nice interface, lots of well designed features. Easy to export games for later analysis on a pc.

The actual strength of Shredder is most impressive, which. I personally attest to based on sudo matches against HIACS which is rated 350 ELO points higher. That is Shredder even won a game with the white pieces. Two problems do exist though. Shredder has a design format that is iPhone oriented which looks skewed on an iPad, not to mention that the interface layout leaves a little to be desired. More frustrating is that the standard Openings played by Shredder are very coffeehouse. Still a strong computer with an obnoxious personality makes for a very good training partner...Again for the consumer if you get annoyed or board with Coffeehouse Openings you can of course program your choice! Great but flawed!!!

This has been the best way to get back into chess and improve my playing. Also, great support from the creators if needed!

This is the best chess app Ive ever used! The individual rating system lets one play an even match with the program, rather than getting slaughtered by a powerful computer. Go for it, youll enjoy its many features whether beginner or genius.

Mostly flawless. Minor flaw: cant look up opening positions by name. Major flaw: cant play music while running Shredder. Almost lost a star for that one.

Really polished, full featured, excellent chess app. No nags, freemium nickel-and-diming or anything like that, just a good solid product.

A really great chess app overall, but two annoyances keep me from giving it five stars: 1. When setting up a scenario and playing as black, Shredder automatically rotates the board (so that black moves up the screen) when you start play. If this isnt what you want, you have to manually flip the board back, and if youre willing to live with it, you set yourself up for annoyance 2. 2. When your board is rotated and you go to set up a new scenario, it stays rotated even if you clear the board, and you cant flip it back from the scenario editor. This means you a) forget its rotated and waste time setting up the position completely reversed, b) try to set up the position upside down, or c) exit the scenario editor, manually flip the board, and then go back into the editor. Given that one of the main things I want this app for is playing out scenarios, these annoyances knock off a star. Fix them and its easily five-stars, the best chess app around.

This is one of the best chess apps on the App Store, but one of the worst icons on my home screen.

Love the app! Especially love the puzzles, but the only thing that I find rather irritating is that points get deducted at the same rate for all of them - whether a puzzle consists of multiple moves or a single move. There must be some correction as to how points get awarded according to the puzzle difficulty. That would only be logical and fair, right?

It adjusts the difficulty after every match according to your playing strength. Id love to see a feature for adjusting the puzzle difficulty as well, because some of them are easy and some are really hard.

My favorite feature is the strength meter. Watching how much the needle moves tells you the key pivot points in a game. Ive entered games Ive played to analyze my mistakes, and I feel its made me a better player. The chess engine is top notch, maybe not the strongest, but more versatile than most.
